MANILA, Philippines — A possible charity boxing match between Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III and Davao City acting mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte is gaining public attention, as Torre on Wednesday accepted the younger Duterte’s challenge to a fistfight, proposing Araneta Coliseum as the venue.

“It’s okay with me if he really is serious,” said Torre during a media briefing. “Maybe this is a very good time for a charity boxing match. We can do it on Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.”

Torre, who recently assumed the top PNP post, said the event could be used to raise funds for Filipinos affected by storms and flooding across the country, especially in Luzon, which has seen days of widespread devastation brought on by consecutive weather disturbances and the southwest monsoon.

Torre even joked about inviting boxing legend Manny Pacquiao as a possible referee.

The challenge stemmed from remarks made by Baste Duterte during his “Basta Dabawenyo” podcast on Sunday, where he took aim at Torre:

“You’re only brave because you are in power. If we have a fistfight, I can take you on, if that’s all there is to it,” Duterte said in Filipino.

The feud between Torre and the Duterte family traces back to former President Rodrigo Duterte’s arrest and transfer to The Hague, where he faces charges before the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged crimes against humanity committed during his bloody anti-drug campaign.

Torre, then head of the PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), oversaw the implementation of the ICC arrest warrant when the elder Duterte returned from Hong Kong on March 11.

The tension between the Dutertes and law enforcement intensified after the ICC proceedings gained traction earlier this year, with allies of the former president decrying the arrest as politically motivated.

As of now, there has been no response from Baste Duterte regarding Torre’s proposed date, venue, or the idea of a charity match officiated by Pacquiao.
