Magnolia boosted their playoff chances in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup with a commanding 107-78 win against Hong Kong Eastern on Sunday. The victory kept the Hotshots in the running for a postseason spot, with head coach Chito Victolero emphasizing the team’s resilience.

The decisive 29-point triumph, combined with San Miguel’s 115-97 loss to TNT Tropang Giga later that night, revitalized Magnolia’s campaign.

Currently, Magnolia and NLEX are tied for the eighth spot in the standings, while defending champions San Miguel Beermen finished their elimination round with a 5-7 record. The Beermen must now wait for the results of this week’s final elimination games to determine their playoff fate.

“It’s all about survival. We entered this game with urgency and the right mindset,” said Victolero. Magnolia seized control with a dominant 26-12 run in the second quarter and never looked back.

Leading the Hotshots was import Ricardo Ratliffe, who tallied 25 points and 16 rebounds. While the team showcased balanced scoring, Victolero emphasized that defense remains their greatest strength. “Defense is our identity. With our backs against the wall, we’ll keep focusing on improving it and correcting our mistakes,” he said.

The Hotshots also benefited from a 10-day break before the match, which allowed them to prepare thoroughly. Paul Lee returned to the lineup after missing three games due to a meniscus tear. Although he went scoreless in 12 minutes, his presence brought much-needed leadership. “Paul’s return gives us composure and direction,” Victolero added.

Young stars Jerom Lastimosa and Zavier Lucero stepped up impressively, each scoring 20 points to fuel Magnolia’s offense.

Magnolia’s playoff hopes hinge on their final elimination round game against Meralco this Friday at the Philsports Arena, where they must secure a win to advance.
